WTF is Eco-Soft?

WTF is Eco-Soft?

Colita Gerard

I don’t know about you, but I like to read the fine print late at night and analyse it. The other night I read the fine print of another pillow company that sells memory foam as “plastic-free”  - well technically, foam is polyurethane which is an elastomer not a plastic, but if it was made from natural rubber they would have said it right? So, it is technically a synthetic-based substance.

And “eco-friendly” - what is eco-friendly about polyurethane foam? And “eco-soft” – I hope you are raising one eyebrow. WTF is Eco-Soft?

But the line that really got me was - “At the end of their lifecycle, our long-lasting pillows can be returned and recycled in the circular economy.”  Really? I know for a fact that Opshops don’t take pillows, and Recycling bins don’t take pillows. Recycled in the circular economy – please raise your eyebrow!!!

I so hate green washing!!!

There is an Australian pillow company that boasts of shredding its old pillows and sending them back to India to be made into yarn. Maybe I am too cynical, but isn’t that a nice way of saying we dump our rubbish in India? Incidentally, the government has just bowed to lobbyists and scrapped the proposed $4/tonne export waste charge. The levy was intended to encourage the development of recycling in Australia. Removing this levy means companies can dump their waste in countries that don’t have strict guidelines, which ultimately means more recyclable waste will end up in landfill, oceans, beaches….

My sister told me about a tip that was excavated in America a few years ago and everything was pretty much still in its same form. They even found carrots after 30 years. It was so heavily compressed that there was no oxygen to decompose anything. This really stayed with me.  We as a society don’t think enough about our rubbish. We take our unwanted clothes to the opshop and feel good, but seriously most of them end up in landfill.

At least 5 million pillows go to landfill each year in Australia. This is based on a pillow every 5 years, but the recommended lifespan of a pillow is 1 to 2 years, so it could be more. Mind-blowing, isn’t it?

Not meaning to blow my own horn, but just for your and my peace of mind – our organic pillows can be composted, yes, they can go in the green bin or compost heap. The thread is also organic cotton, so it is completely natural.

Cheers Colita
