Organic Wool Bedding

Why Organic Wool Bedding Is Better for Your Sleep And The Planet

So you want to sleep better, knowing your family can breathe safely at night?

We spend a third of our life in bed, so make your bedroom the most natural environment as possible.

I don’t like throwing anything out, but if you have any polyester on the bed, then imagine how much microplastic you breathe in at night. I’m afraid it’s time to strip the bed and send it to be repurposed. My local transfer station has a free bin for repurposing material, hopefully yours does too. Op-shops are pretty overwhelmed and most things end up in the tip, so I tend to not send any bedding there.

Make sure your sheets are 100% natural fibres like cotton, hemp, or linen. Avoid bamboo, it’s so highly processed, it’s just green washing at its best.

I’m not going to go into the mattress, as that is an expensive change, but just make sure it is wrapped in natural fibres to seal any loose microplastic in.

The benefits of Organic wool bedding

Wool is also a natural air purifier and hypoallergenic, which means it is less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. Dust mites, mould and bacteria and other allergens find it hard to thrive in wool, making it a great choice for families with allergy sufferers.

Wool also helps control humidity, creating a healthy sleep environment. It absorbs moisture and releases it when the air is dry, helping to keep the air balanced for restful sleep.

I have been making our organic wool doonas and pillows for at least 15 years, They are incredibly stable, the wool doesn’t move around and wool naturally regulates your temperature, so you have a good night’s sleep.

Our doona are so fluffy and lush to sleep under and a good sleep leads to improved focus, better physical health and enhanced mood, creating a positive atmosphere at home.

Environmental Responsibility

Our organic wool is from certified organic farms, where they follow strict animal and environmental guidelines. The animals are not mulesed or treated with chemicals and no herbicides or pesticides have been used on the farm. These farming method keeps soil healthy, protects wildlife, and promotes sustainable practices.

I personally source all the organic wool directly from certified organic farmers who really care about their animals and the environment and I pay them more than they would get at the wool market.

After shearing the wool is then washed in biodegradable detergent and carded into wadding in Australia. Regular wool bedding may contain chemical and pesticide residue. Plus most “washable” Australian wool doonas and quilts have been treated with chlorine Hercosett 125 in China. This treatment basically coats the wool in polymers which can harm your health and the planet. Also, with shipping wool to China and back, it creates more carbon footprint.

The organic cotton fabric we use is ethically sourced in India, it’s GOTS certified and unbleached. There is no organic cotton made in Australia.

Also, another thing we do differently from all other doonas on the market is that all our threads are 100% organic cotton so that at the end of your doonas long life it can be composted in your garden.

By opting for organic materials, you actively contribute to preserving the planet for future generations, promoting a healthier environment for all. And you can feel good knowing your purchase helps wool producers who care about sustainability and treat their animals well.

Support local!

It is not just organic farmers you are supporting, but also local manufacturing. I can name ten people who are actively involved in making your wool bedding. That is ten families you are supporting on Australian wages.

Buying local not only strengthen communities but also ensures that you’re getting a high-quality product without compromises.

Easy Care and Maintenance

Organic wool bedding is easy to take care of, make sure you use a 100% natural doona cover, like linen or 100% cotton. To keep your bedding fresh, simply air in the sun seasonally. Sunlight is a natural UV which fades stains and sterilises. If there is an accident just spot wash with wool detergent and dry flat in the sun.

It’s a no brainer – ditch polyester and green washed products and change your sleep for the better. Environmental impact is at the forefront of everything we do at Wool Valley so you know I have done my research if I have it on the site.
